From science to practice: evidence as the profession’s guiding principle

Dear reader,
In our previous editorial, we reflected on science and research as the cornerstones of professional identity, capable of transforming individuals, teams and, ultimately, the professions themselves. We argued that science is not merely, and in and of itself, a simple academic tool, but rather an attitude towards knowledge — a way of thinking, questioning and moving forward. Today, I wish to expand on this reflection and look at the next step: how to translate this attitude into concrete, consistent practice with real impact.
If science shapes the way we see the world, evidence shapes the way we act within it.
In a context where information circulates at an unprecedented speed, the ability to distinguish opinion from knowledge, trend from rigour, and enthusiasm from added value, becomes essential. Evidence-based practice is not an abstract concept; it is, in fact, the practical expression of a profession’s scientific maturity. It is through evidence that we underpin technical decisions, evaluate technologies, reorganise processes, set priorities and ensure that innovation is sustainable and responsible. It is also through evidence that we ensure quality depends not merely on individual experience, but on systematised, validated and shared knowledge. Evidence is, therefore, our compass — not because it offers us definitive answers, but because it prevents us from navigating by intuition or habit.
However, putting science into practice requires more than just good will. It requires scientific literacy, time for analysis, structures that prioritise evaluation and continuous improvement, and leaders who understand that excellence is built on data, reflection and consistency. It also requires a collective commitment: the recognition that professional development is not achieved through training alone, but through culture — a culture that questions, measures, compares and learns.
It is precisely here that Radiações magazine wishes to continue to play its part. Whilst, on the one hand, we are committed to promoting science and research as the cornerstones of our professional fields, on the other we wish to emphasise the importance of their practical application. We aim to be a forum where evidence is not merely disseminated, but interpreted, contextualised and transformed into value for Radiology, Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine.
In this new issue, we invite each of our readers to reflect on how each of us can contribute to a practice that is better informed, more rigorous and more aligned with the available knowledge. On how we can strengthen the scientific culture of our teams. On how we ensure that the innovation we adopt is underpinned by evidence and not merely by expectation. On how, together, we continue to build professions that honour their past, respond to the present and prepare, with rigour, for the future.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue.
