Voiding Cystourethrography in Paediatrics – A Clinical Case Report

Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG) in paediatrics is an imaging examination used to assess the lower urinary tract, specifically the bladder and urethra. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the relevance of VCUG in clinical diagnosis, specifically in the investigation of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR).
The case report describes a 13-month-old female infant with two episodes of urinary tract infection in less than six months, with no abnormalities detected on ultrasound and an indication for VCUG. The study was conducted in a room with a remote-controlled table in accordance with institutional protocol.
In the case under study, VUR was detected at an early stage, so further images were taken during the examination, specifically in the AP view, with the aim of documenting the stages of VUR. VUR can be classified into five grades, defined by the International Reflux Committee, which vary according to the severity and extent of urinary tract involvement; a grade II VUR was identified in this case.
This clinical case demonstrates that training plays an essential role in ensuring correct technical execution, thereby avoiding unnecessary exposure to ionising radiation. This examination can contribute to the early detection of significant abnormalities, enabling more assertive therapeutic management and, consequently, a better prognosis for the patient.
